Motorhome Rehab Pt 3

Image
Day 3 of work. Still demoing. Started off taking off the trim on the outside. Carefully unscrewed and cut through the glue/silicone without damaging the fiberglass.   This uncovered the screws that hold the base to the frame and the trim. The wood under the trim on the passenger side was completely rotted and fell away quickly. The drivers side was much more solid and not as rotted but still in bad shape. Pulled out some more of the front inside corner to see how far up the mold went. Luckily it seems to be only a little! Hopefully this will mean we won't have to replace much of this. Probably just the top layer to make it look nice inside. Next was to work on the piece in front of the large baseboard. The way it was put together is not ideal. The long pieces were not screwed into the frame, just the end pieces. It actually just fell out,it wasn't screwed to anything. Originally it seems as though the wider part was made with a two 1x2s with a styrofoam core, sa...

Motorhome Rehab Pt 2

I spent the first day cleaning up and straightening up before the demo. Got a plan together and started to pull some things apart. The first task is to peel away the layers to see how bad the damage is and to see if we can find out where the leak is. I know that the trim on the outside is loose and the screws have no wood to hold them. There is a ton of mold on the inside paneling, ceiling and floor. So I started peeling away layers... lots of wet, moldy layers. Top layer on the base is a layered  paneling of some type on top of 3/4" plywood. There is a break in the wood for a metal bar that seems to hold two pieces of wood and fiberglass together. I am a little concerned that if I remove that piece the entire front panel will detach from the base. Reality is that it's not attached to much now anyway, the sides are completely rotted, the trim is not screwed into anything and the front corner pieces are stripped down to the fiberglass. In front of the metal bar there...

Motorhome Rehab Pt 1

For months we have been trying to figure out how to remedy a substantial leak in my parents motorhome. I have called around with places to fix it ($10,000-$15,000) and watched every video on YouTube for DIY solution. With Covid-19 interrupting normal plans we thought that this would be a great time to give it a whirl! You can see here the dark areas in the cabover. Just the tip of the iceberg. The second shot is of the molding on the outside (both sides look this way.) Now my husband is VERY handy and smart, and I learn things pretty quick if I put my mind to it, so we feel pretty confident we can't make it worse. (famous last words) HUGE shoutout to this guy on YouTube who has given us the confidence to do this job! His Winnie is a few years older than ours but it is almost the same! We have watched each of these videos dozens of times! It is a 2003 MiniWinnie 31' Class C motorhome with a bumpout and 26,000 miles on it. Phase I - Get it out of the Drivew...
