Motorhome Rehab Pt 6 - It's waterproof!!

Image
One of the most challenging parts of this job! Luckily we had three days of great weather in a row to work out this part! I tried my hand at cleaning some of the insulation in the nose. It was kind of a fail. I ended up just cutting some of it out and I will replace with some new stuff. We did seal up the front nose piece. We had a plan A and a plan B but we ended up on plan F! We made a jig to hold it up while the glue dried, but realized that it wouldn't pinch right, so we were just going to use one side of the jig and the T-molding that holds it. Getting it pulled all the way up was a challenge! There is just no way get any decent leverage on the area over the hood. We ended up pinching it with the t-molding and using my Norwex mops to hold it up. Thanks to our neighbor that provided an extra hand when we were stuck. It is stressful when you know the glue is drying quickly and you have to rethink your plan a dozen times, but we got it done! I worked hard on ...

Motorhome Rehab Pt 5 - Base re-installation!

Great few days! We were finally blessed with a sunny warm day so I could work outside on the trim. I started by putting the final two coats of the car paint on the cab. It looks great, I probably could have done a better job sanding down the edge of the old paint, but no one will ever see this area as it is under the screws holding down the bunk. For now, it is sealed so no rust will form.  Bob helped make the second piece for the floorboard. It is a slightly modified construction. Longer, wider side boards, but still has a styrofoam core. It is laminated the same way as the larger piece except the fiberglass is still on the cab and will need to be laminated after we install it to the front piece. Plan for this week is to install it and create a jig to apply good, even pressure on the area that needs to be glued and get the nose completely glued and ready for the trim to be put back on. New board before the second layer of hardwo...

Motorhome Rehab Pt 4

Part 4 Weekend work. Weather has been the enemy this week. Almost every day has been rainy and windy, which is terrible to rehab a leak. First task was to clean trim and fiberglass without damaging the fiberglass. After reading some different websites and blogs, I landed on Goof Off and Mineral Spirits. in addition to a Chisel (not recommended) plastic scraper, wire brush and towel. (Disclaimer: Neither of these things are great for the fiberglass or the paint on the trim. Please be extra careful and only use what is 100% necessary. I am worried about long term effects on the fiberglass but so far it has been ok, and I have only used VERY small amounts. Some of the paint on the trim has come off from the scraping and solutions, but I am not concerned too much, I can always repaint it if needed.) Eternabond is VERY sticky! It will take a lot of scraping and rubbing to get off. If you scrape and pull it slowly it comes off nicely in many places. ...
